Soft Launch into a Rebrand: I Used to Let It Slide — But Not Anymore.
Something happened this week that reminded me of a part of myself I thought I had lost. It was subtle. It was quick. But it was potent. And it was a reminder of how far I’ve come — and how deeply I’m no longer willing to betray myself for the comfort of others.
A former student of mine reached out via Instagram to tell me he had a new number and asked me to call. I waited a few days, and did what any professional would do — I emailed his mother. We work in the same district, and we all know it’s against policy for teachers to contact students via social media.
She responded in twenty minutes then She called shortly after.
And then... the performance began.
She started with “Hello, stranger.”
Said they’d been calling me.
Said she had a new number too.
Mentioned they’d be in town soon — like I was supposed to already know.
But here’s the thing:
I have no missed calls from her number.
I have no text from her with her name or her son’s.
No email until I reached out first.
If she truly wanted to connect — the way real people who care do — there were ways.
And she didn’t take a single one of them.
This is when the old me might’ve played along. Smiled through it. Gave the benefit of the doubt. But I don’t live there anymore.
And here’s what I know now:
Some people are more interested in preserving proximity to you than preserving truth with you. Some people want the benefits of your light without offering any warmth in return.
Some people are still hoping you’ll let it slide — because you used to.
But not anymore.
Y’all can have that shit. Allow me to reintroduce myself. This moment is about clarity, about showing up as someone who knows her value and is no longer available for misuse, confusion and lopsided relationships.
I’m no longer entertaining half-truths.
I’m no longer pretending not to see what I see.
I’m no longer holding space for people who wouldn't hold the same for me.
There was a time I would’ve remained quiet.
Kept giving.
Kept making excuses.
That time is over.
Welcome to the season of Find Out:
